So I’m just walking along, “wearing” my baby as they say, trying to kill some time at Fashion Island after a special and fun day at the beach with Grandma AND Daddy, and then as if the day can’t get any better….there it is!
Did your heart go pitter-patter, ’cause mine did. In the 90’s, Jonathan Adler = Beautiful White Ceramic Pottery. Today, Jonathan Adler = Mega Design Mogul. He even had his own line of Toms shoes and sunglasses last year, nuff said. He’s everywhere, apparently, because there I was minding my own business just trying to people-watch in one of the best places to people-watch and I was smacked in the face with these über cute teal doors and impressive merchandising displays. Check it out!

His design influences are fairly apparent as you explore the showroom, from the sculptural room divider in the image directly above, to the Rex Ray (iconic mid-century graphic designer) display a few images up.
I particularly loved this mid-century style chair with a lavender, cream and coral ikat print on a blue and white chevron rug. Such a fun mix of color and pattern, don’t ya think?
Did you know he threw his first clay pot at summer camp as a kid? It’s always fascinating to me what people latch onto as kids and never let go of. For me it was the box of extra drafting supplies my grandpa “the architect” sent to our house when I was a kid. I remember the funky mechanical pencil I claimed and even stashed in my backpack to use at school. No yellow no.2 pencil for me, thank you very much. I had just discovered lead value and weight and I was going to use it. A bundle of the supplies arriving in that treasure box got me through design school in college and still hang out with me today. My love of drafting supplies at a young age was also evidenced by my love of browsing the huge drafting supply section at Law’s Hobby Center in San Luis Obispo. The best 2-for-1 was grabbing some roasted corn at the downtown farmer’s market and then popping into Law’s for a perusal. I haven’t since come across a superior drafting supply store, most likely due to all the architectural students at Cal Poly.

I think the things we latch onto as kids are almost always the things that still make our hearts jump for joy as adults. What did you latch onto as a kid that made an indelible mark on your future or just makes your heart still go pitter-patter?
Peace,
